Maths game

13 08 2006

In another email from TIm:

I thought that I would send you a game recently sent to us by Richard Anderson, Teacher & E-Learning Coordinator at Wolverhampton CLC. It can be downloaded at this address:
www.wolverhamptonclc.co.uk/files/mathsgame.mission

Please note that you will have to open missionmaker first before running the file! It is a maths game that he intends to use with a number of Gifted & Talented sessions at the CLC in September 2006.  He would be really keen to obtain your feedback.

Can you leave any feedback you have on the game here, and I will pass it on to him.

I’m looking forward to seeing your reviews of the game! It will (eventually) form part of a larger game for use with Key Stage 2 (Primary) students.

Regards to you all and keep on MissionMaking,

Richard Anderson

It would be good for primary schools.

HOWEVER.

Although the prime numbers and shapes etc weren’t hard, the game had a few glitches that made it hard to, for example, shoot the prime numbers in the shooting range. this was because they kept disappearing when i moved off the red square, but instead of them all disappearing and re-appearing, only a few did, so you had to be in a CERTAIN place to see them all.

That would be hard for key stage two kids.

And when you “suffer the consquences” it was odd, because the aliens didn’t do anything but walk around, and then a timer was going off.

i think you should change it to “if you get it wrong, you have to tidy your room”

or something silly like that.

because EVERYONE hates tidying their room haha.

but it was a good idea. :]

i thought this was extremely difficult and should not be used in ks2 and instead it should be used for the extremely talented in computer games playing in GCSE’s as i am doing my SAT’s this year and it took me numerous goes and 45 mins. to just get the hang of it. Aswell i think there should be more learning in the first part where you are collecting the items. It was a different experience and i could not understand it without sound. I am extremely scared now to play any more of this type of game

hi i am in year 9 in top set maths and i really enjoyed playing the game. I thought the maths part of the game was good for ks2 but the actually game was quite hard at first. Improvements could be made by having text and speech to guide instead of speech and having soething to do with maths in the first part. Still a good game though.

Thanks for your comments everyone. We’ve now used the game as part of a session with Y5 students, and the session went really well. I took on board some of your comments, and have tried to include popups to reinforce some of the information given to the player - e.g. when the countdown begins to decompression in the balloon room.

I’m interested in what people mean when they talk about “glitches” - have I missed something? The only bug I’m aware of is with the robot (it sometimes decides to stop moving). I think this is a known problem with the latest version of MissionMaker, which will hopefully be sorted out in the next release.

When we used it with students, they worked in pairs, and we did an introductory session about prime numbers to get them started. The students also collaborated really well between groups, even though there was a prize for the winning team!

Thanks again for looking at the game. I’m going to upload the complete set of adventures in the not-too-distant future (there’s an intro section, and an English game too).

Me and Joel now run the Missionmaker club at The Adams as Miss Med left. We have got high demand for games and are planning to create a R.E., French and possibly English game on the new edition.
